Skidmarks

Ah yes.. skidmarks. I left 'em yesterday.

No no, not these skidmarks. I left a set with my tires.

I was driving along, minding my own business, and I saw a dear bound up the hill near me, and jump the guardrail. Now, I grew up driving in the "country", and have had a number of close calls. I generally think I do pretty well in spotting them in the turf ahead, etc.

When I saw the deer coming, the thought ran through my mind "Ah shizzzz... Here goes my record for missing deer." I know my day is coming, as there are just so many out and about.

So, I slammed on the brakes, left a portion of my tires on the road, hit the horn, and waited to see what happened.

Inches. That was it. I missed him.

I honestly thought that I could have brushed him with my car. I got out to look later, just to see, not quite believing it. (I did see that I really need to wash my car, however. Wow. What slob takes care of this machine?)

(Coming home later, I got to see my skidmarks, and was all "Ooh, I made those".)

I did go for a run last night, and included my walking in the run totals and time for the first time. Before I get there, I'll talk about the run.

I was going along, again, minding my own business, and feeling great. 3/4 of a mile into the run, I hear a dog barking and making a bee-line for me. Oh, great.

I'm not an animal person. I never had a dog growing up, and I don't really know how to approach a situation like this. I don't know the dog's intentions. I'd prefer him to do his thing, and I'll do mine.

The owner just sort of stood there yelling his name, not really moving. So, I decided to do the "flight" choice of "fight or flight". Not that I can really outrun many of the creatures here on Earth. But, what are you supposed to do?

So, I hauled it, dropped a few vocal choice words toward the dog and his owner, and off I went.

No harm done. Except, it just really turned the run into a crap run. A skidmark run, if you will, since we're in the toilet on this post. After that, I just wasn't feeling the groove. Sure, my numbers were OK, but I just wasn't feeling it.

I punched out 3.56 miles at a 9:20 pace. That included the walking. I'm really surprised it really wasn't too much slower than normal.

All in all, two potentially disastrous situations avoided during the day. Not too shabby at all.

Alright, that's all for now.. keep on rockin'!

wow, quite the day for you huh! Nice job narrowly missing that deer! BTW, after my comment and your post yesterday about speeding, i ALMOST got nailed yesterday driving on a never-before traveled road. phew.

I've never hit a deer, but I've had deer run into the side of my car twice.

I've learned that most dogs will not come out of their yard to you if you just run by and ignore them. The ones that do, you should face them, hands on hips and step toward them. I've never had a dog that wouldn't back off when I do this. One lesson learned from watching the Dog Whisperer.

That sure was quite a day for you. Glad to hear you got through it all unscathed.

Glad you were able to avoid both situations. Most dogs will chase but not bite, although as one who has been bitten by a dog on a run not all are nice!

F*cking lazy-@$$ dog owners!

Ian got bit by a dog down the street from us a while ago, but the owner made every attempt to stop the dogs (which got loose by accident) and was over by Ian's side apologizing and trying to make it right almost right away. He was genuinely concerned and contrite.

I am not HAPPY Ian got bit, but at least the owner wasn't a total a-hole about it and he assured us it would NOT happen again.

I am a dog owner, but I am always pissed off when I hear these stories about irresponsible pet owners. These people are just poor excuses for human beings!

Anyroad, glad you (and the deer) came away from all these close calls unscathed!

Nice job with the run. 9:20 with some walking - those are numbers not to be sneezed (or skidded) at!

I'm so glad you didn't hit the dear...for both of your sakes!

Love the title of this post!

That's a good pace on the run, esp. with the walk breaks-- sorry, though, you couldn't enjoy it more. I know it's those things-- a potential dog bite, a near-miss of a deer while driving-- that kind of throw me off and alter my mood. But hey, those skidmarks are now like your own personal graffiti!

I'd definitely run away from a potential dog bite! There's enough of that nastiness around the blogosphere.

Consider it a training run. Like an unintentional fartlek.

(insert skid mark joke here)

Deer are just about the dumbest creatures on earth. Seriously. If they didn't fubar up cars so much, I'd look to hit them on purpose.

Skidmarks...hahahahahaha

OK...the dog thing. I'm not an animal person either. Dogs make me the most nervous. I've never been accosted by a cat while running...A reallly effing big goose once tried to snap at me. One time a dog, being walked by it's owner and on a leash took a snap at my leg...WTF?

close call!
i couldn't open the skidmark link- stupid work wifi filter!!- will have to look later. i heard about a travel theft deterrant: a pair of men's undies with a pouch to keep your jewelry in and a HUGE fake skidmark down the center to keep baggage handlers/ anyone snooping through your suitcase from wanting to touch it. i thought it was brilliant!

holy double skid marks, I live in "deer" country too and am VERY leary about driving at dusk or dawn, if you see one you KNOW there are a dozen behind him. Be careful. As for dogs, I never run towards them, I stop and either walk giving them a wide berth or stop dead....I was in the middle of a dog fight (literally) when I was young and they can really bite!!

No harm in walking during a marathon, in fact I run 10 minutes at race pace and walk very quickly for 1 minute throughout the race...it's just the way I am ; )

Now as for alcohol, I NEVER knew you could get Guinness in a bottle, how gauche! LOL

And I'm definitely trying your mint julip receipe! YUMMY...

thanks, jeezzzz, I shouldn't stay away so long...

Glad you missed the deer and the dog didn't bite you in the a$$. Not a bad job on the run, though.
