Wow, what a Tuesday

Back when the Celtics acquired KG and Ray Allen, people started talking to me about going to the NBA finals. I told them, "hey, I'm looking for a winning season. Let's start with 42 wins."

The regular season started, and we started out 8-0 or something like that.. I said, "this is something special". We ran out to have the best NBA record this year. Amazing, considering where we were last year. We secured a playoff spot, and I said "wow. That's great. We've come a long way." It wasn't until we made it to the finals that I let myself start thinking about winning the championship. Once we made it to the final 7 games, I let myself start thinking about winning it all. Even if we had lost, it was an amazing season. Watching the jumbotron video of the Celtics gives me goosebumps.

Last night, game 6, was incredible. The Celtics played their defense, and never let up. They wanted to win, and played superbly. I was fired up going into the game (my wife turned to me at one point where I was a bit over exuberant and said "I'm sitting right here..."). We watched the whole thing, and it was just wonderful.

I wore my Celtics garb into work today. Got a few looks and laughs, but hey, it's been 22 years.

In other news, I went to the baseball game last night (left early.. we were winning 10-0, and the game was on.). It was "Mardi Gras" night, on a 2 for Tuesday. The group behind us was hilarious, a bachelor party. They kept calling it "Party Gras".

I'm taking a bit of break watching sports on TV, just to wind down. Lots of baseball left in the season. I also promised my wife that I'd watch a double feature of "The Young & The Restless" tonight with her, as she's been so good watching the playoff games with me.

We beat L.A.! Woot!

This past weekend

This past weekend, I did no physical activity at all. Weather was a bit dicey (t-storms and such) on Saturday. On Sunday, I woke up dizzy and never felt right after that. Figured it wasn't a good time to go play in traffic.

Game 5 was last night. We were close, but alas. Of course, I was hoping to win the first 2 games (which we did), and steal one in LA (which we also did). So, I shouldn't get too greedy. We head back to Boston for game 6 on Tuesday, and game 7 (if necessary) on Thursday. Hopefully it gets wrapped up Tuesday. Game 7s, while fun, are intense. I'd like to close it out while we have the advantage.

Game 5 also saw the end of our big jar of cheese balls. Long live the cheese balls.

3-1

Decided not to go running or biking last night because I've done something every day for the last 5 days.. Figured a rest would be in order. Plus, my leg muscles kind of twitched and felt funny when I went down the stairs at work last night. So, it was a rest day.

I ate dinner at Panera Bread, followed by a short jaunt into Target, looking for a couple of Father's Day presents.

We went home, and proceeded to watch the Celtics game. The first half was absolutely abysmal. Down by 24 at point. But then, we entered the 3rd quarter down by 18. We subsequently left the 3rd down by 2. (This is the ubiquitous 'we'. I wasn't playing, so don't look too hard for me in the highlight reel)

I feel better being up 3-1, rather than leveled off at 2-2. The stats show that no team has rallied from a 3-1 deficit, but I'm not going to bank on that. I'm hoping for a win on Sunday to wrap this up, though. No sense in giving the Lakers any more chances at this.

2-1

My beloved Celtics dropped the first game in L.A. last night. They were close, it could have been theirs, for sure.

I'm hoping they view game 4 as a 'must win'.. (That's so cliche, I know). If they snag game 4, they would be up 3-1, and in super position. I'm hoping the series doesn't get evened out at 2-2.

If Pierce shows up (did someone forget to get him a plane ticket to LA?) and they start driving the ball in the paint more, I think good things will happen.

BTW, memo to David Stern: These late games are ridiculous. I understand on the week day, to some degree. The whole east coast/west coast thing, yeah yeah. Must they start at 9, though? Couldn't they start at 8 or 8:30? The weekend games, start them at 6. That line you gave about the ratings being higher after 11pm.. C'mon. For the west coast, maybe. What about those of us on the east coast? What about kids? Think of the children!! How can they get involved in the game if it starts after they go to bed? I think at least a couple of the games should have earlier start times.

Sporting thoughts from the weekend

Where to start, where to start...

I guess I'll start with the Celtics. 2-0, baby! We did our best to give the game away.. Hopefully we won't do garbage minutes in the 4th quarter any more.. finish all 48 minutes at full intensity, don't give the Lakers any breathing room. But, we did win. I'll take it. Apart from the disaster in the second half of the fourth quarter, I thought the guys played superbly.
Now, if we can go to L.A. and steal one, we'll be in great shape.

Regarding an earlier post about Joba, apparently Cashman did ask Joba what he wanted to do- if he wanted to be a starter or a relief man. Joba chose the former. If I were Cashman, I'd not present the choice. Leave 2 solid arms in the bullpen, and figure out a different solution for the starters. But, they didn't ask me. I wouldn't have traded Ted Lilly a few years back, either. But, yet again, they didn't catch me at home when they called soliciting advice.

The Belmont was run, no triple crown, yet again. 30 years now. Don't know what to say. The horse I was pulling for in the Kentucky Derby, Denis of Cork, put forth a decent showing again.

On the local front, I went for a run on Sunday morning. It was 10:00, and the weather was at 78 degrees, with a guesstimate humidity of 80%. It was disgusting. I ran a little over 4 miles, but mixed in some walk breaks in there. The humidity and heat just sucked the energy out of me. I even ran with my iPod for a little extra boost, but it didn't help. Maybe I should have tried some different tunes. (I was listening to Rush's "Rush in Rio" album.)

That's about it for now!

Game 1

Last night was game 1 of the NBA finals. I've been a Celtics fan my entire life. I remember laying on the floor, watching TV in the living room with my dad, and watching the Celtics play in the old Boston Garden. It's been 21 years since they've been to the finals (22 since they've won it). I was fricken EXCITED.

I donned my Bird jersey, threw on my Celtics hat, and watched. It was a very good game. I was stunned when Paul Pierce went down. I was psyched when he jumped back onto the court and was back in the game. That guy can play. Always has been able to. I bet his body hurts like hell this morning, though. Strained knee.. He took a hand to the face/eye. Big ol' scratch on his chest. Not to mention the normal pushing and shoving and bumping and bruising which goes on in a game (especially a finals game).

And, for those that don't know, we won! Woot! 1 down, 3 to go. Beat L.A.!
